From the very first listen, Mellie Bogard instantly pulls you into the world of Overlooking the City with the nostalgic energy of “Watching Me.” It’s one of those openings that immediately sets the tone and lets you know you’re about to ride through something smooth, laid back, and carefully crafted. The deeper you get into the album, the more the project begins to feel like a soundtrack to summer nights in the city; windows down, music up, and not a care in the world.
One thing Mellie does extremely well throughout this project is tap into nostalgia without sounding outdated. From sampled inspirations of some of Hip Hop and Rap’s most recognizable records and beats to his own fresh spin on them, Overlooking the City feels familiar while still sounding original. The hooks are catchy, the production is clean, and Mellie’s mellow yet punchy delivery keeps every song entertaining from start to finish. He doesn’t overdo anything, and that’s what makes the album work so well. The vibe feels natural.
The production throughout the album deserves major credit too. You can tell real thought went into both the sound selection and the arrangement of the tracks. Nothing feels random or thrown together. Every song transitions smoothly into the next, helping the album flow like one complete experience instead of just a collection of songs. In a time where a lot of projects feel rushed, Overlooking the City sounds intentional.
With only nine tracks and just one feature appearance from Rita Tequila, Mellie proves you don’t need a packed guest list to keep listeners engaged. The album stands strong on its own while still offering enough variety for different listeners to enjoy. Whether you’re looking for laid-back cruising music, catchy hooks, or songs that can move a party crowd, there’s something here for everybody.
Standout records like “Mannish” and “Everyday” definitely feel built for the clubs and summertime functions. Those are the type of songs you can easily hear catching a crowd’s attention the moment the beat drops. Honestly, several tracks on this project deserve radio play because the replay value is definitely there.
Overall, Overlooking the City is one of those underground gems that quietly sneaks up on you the more you listen. It’s vibey, entertaining, polished, and easy to run back multiple times without skipping tracks. Mellie Bogard created a project that feels authentic while still being commercially enjoyable.
On a scale of 1-10, D’Hendo De’Coded gives Overlooking the City a solid 9/10. Definitely worthy of a listen and absolutely playlist material.
